Australian AI Companies

Every AI company on this register that has passed verification, 28 in total. Each one has been checked by hand against public records: an active ABN, an Australian address confirmed against ABR records, and at least one Australia-resident founder or director. That is a smaller number than most lists for this search, and the gap is the point.

Why this list is shorter than the others

Lists ranking for "AI companies Australia" routinely pad the count with multinationals that happen to have a Sydney office, ASX-listed infrastructure firms with a data team, and offshore development agencies paying for placement. Counts of 300 to 800 come from scraping business registers. Nobody checks whether the company is Australian, or whether it does AI.

The criteria here are published in full on the verification standard page. The short version: an active ABN on the Australian Business Register, an Australian business address confirmed against ABR records, at least one Australia-resident founder or director per ASIC, and a public website with Australian contact details. Badges lapse after 12 months unless the company re-attests.

This is a desk check by an editor, not a government certification. It filters out the obvious noise. It is not a substitute for your own due diligence.

Founding years run from 1980 to 2026, so this is not only a startup list. Sector coverage skews to the industries where Australian AI has commercial traction rather than the ones with the most press: mining, defence, clinical documentation, agriculture and utilities.

Cities with four or more verified listings get their own hub page. The rest show a count here until they reach that threshold, because a city page with two entries is not worth publishing.

Questions about Australian AI companies

How many AI companies are there in Australia?
There is no official count. LaunchVic, the Victorian Government's startup agency, reports 188 AI companies in Melbourne's CBD alone. Commercial directories claim figures from 300 to 800 nationally, but those are usually built by scraping business registers, so they include firms that are neither Australian nor working in AI. The AI Registry lists 28 companies that have passed a documented desk check.
What counts as an Australian AI company?
On this register, four things are checked against public records: an active ABN on the Australian Business Register, an Australian business address confirmed against ABR records, at least one founder or director resident in Australia per ASIC records, and a public website with Australian contact details. Badges expire after 12 months unless the company re-attests.
What are the biggest AI companies in Australia?
Size here is recorded as an employee band rather than revenue, because headcount is the figure that can be checked. The largest band on the register is 500+ employees: Imdex, Mantel Group and Quantium. Several listed companies are private and do not publish financials, so a revenue ranking would not be verifiable.
Which of these companies are Australian-owned?
27 of 28. The difference matters: a company can be founded in Australia, keep its engineering here, and still be foreign-owned after an acquisition. Where that has happened, the listing says so rather than keeping the Australian-owned label.
Which Australian AI companies keep customer data onshore?
2 of 28 listings carry the Data Sovereign badge, which requires a written attestation naming the hosting provider and the Australian region. That badge reflects what the company has stated and what is publicly checkable. It is not a security audit, so anyone running a formal procurement should still confirm directly with the vendor.
